The Chinese Community 2.0
Hopes and dreams of a new Chinese generation in The Netherlands.
So-called Chinese Global Citizens, arriving in the Netherlands in the late ‘90s and 2000s, follow a path very different from generations of Chinese migrants that preceded them. Recent migrants include students, engineers, designers, lawyers and so forth. Their reasons for moving half the globe differ from searching more artistic, sexual or political freedom, to chasing less social pressure or escaping the 9x9x6 culture. All in all, most are in search of more or better opportunities. The community of Chinese Global Citizens is extremely diverse and varies in lifestyle to a great extend. Still, they are even less visible than the ‘bananengeneratie’. So, why do they stay?
What binds them and what are the different challenges they face? How do they maintain transnational relations with home, family and culture, while living, working and chasing their dreams in the Netherlands?
